What is CNAME pointing?
A CNAME is a Canonical Name record. It is a type of resource record in the Domain Name System (DNS) used to specify that a domain name is an alias for another domain, which is the "canonical" domain.
CNAME records must always be pointed to another domain name, never to an IP address.

Zone Text Example

If you wanted the domain www.mybikeshop.com to go to your website www.tomsbikes.co.uk you could Alias the first domain to the second using a CNAME record...

NAME	TYPE	VALUE
www.mybikeshop.com.	CNAME	www.tomsbikes.co.uk.

Or...
Anyone visiting www.mybikeshop.com would be redirected to www.tomsbikes.co.uk

So a CNAME is like a redirection sign or a different name for a site (alias).

NAME	TYPE	VALUE
shop.mybikeshop.com.	CNAME	www.tomsbikes.co.uk.
